Summerlicious 2015: Bier Markt

Hey Everyone!

Two out of Two ladies and gentlemen! I had a mini reunion with my University friends and well, Summerlicious kind of happened with it. After much debate, we settled on Bier Markt, located in Shops of Don Mills. Seeing as how none of us have ever visited this lovely shopping establishment, we got lost quite quickly (of course). But nevertheless! We forged ahead (and got very distracted by shopping along the way).

Bier Markt is located among other restaurants, which lets patrons decide what to eat (I guess). I quite enjoyed Bier Markt’s interior. It was very eclectic, a good mix of bar and restaurant. I also assume they have a lovely patio, as I could only see it and not sit in the beautiful blinding sunshine.

I ordered the French Onion Soup Gratin to start. The soup was sweet (yay caramelized onions!). The toast on the top was very good, not soggy at all (miracle!). In fact, it was even crunchy and it was extremely cheesy. The onions were soft yet crunchy and wonderful on my taste buds. My only complaint for this soup is that it could’ve been hotter. But I basically like my food to be scalding, so that really is just a personal opinion.

I had the Veal Schnitzel next. Oh sigh. With a name such as Bier Markt, I had high hopes for their Schnitzel, and well, I was disappointed but my dining companion was relatively okay with hers. Mine was, sadly, dry, bitter and flavourless. That is a huge discrepancy, as my dining companion’s was not dry, or bitter, and was a little above flavourless. My entire table took a bite out of my meal and the result was the same: dry, bitter and flavourless. On the other hand, the mashed potatoes were not terrible, and was actually kind of eggy.

My dessert was a waffle ice cream sandwich. It got very very chocolatey towards the end. It was one of those at first it was good then it got –shrug-. The ice cream was done fine and the feeling really was just fine.

I’m quite sad about this review. I walked into the restaurant knowing that I would potentially be disappointed (another friend previously visited and had informed me that she was very disappointed.). I didn’t realize I would be this disappointed. My two dining companions ordered the crème brulee and one was fine while the other was burnt and bitter. Bitter seems to be a reoccurring theme in this meal.

The only redeeming feature was our waiter, who was friendly and quite lovely truthfully. He was the best thing in the restaurant.
